Back to Basics – back maintenance workshop: Monday’s 1pm-2pm with Jenny

What?: The goal of this course is to enable you to develop your own body postural awareness, and to build the ability to maintain and improve the integrity of your spine and to know when an exercise is unsuitable/uncomfortable and to stop. To recognise healthy stretching, how far to open your own bodies and when you are approaching ‘yellow flag’ areas of exercise. The course is suitable for anyone who finds their back pain is exacerbated by age, find they are carrying non-specific back pain, and no recognised/diagnosed underlying causes of back pain.

We will come to understand how postural imbalance brings disturbance to the body, look at each individual’s posture and find ways of improving it by looking at imbalances found within the feet the hips and the spine itself. We will observe the body as a whole and then find weaker/tight areas leading to this imbalance and therefore pain/discomfort.

We will look at the mechanical and non-mechanical aspects. There are many forms of mechanical back pain, this can be felt via the spine or originate from the spine. The other common form of back pain is ‘radicular’ caused by trapped nerves or slipped discs.

This course is suitable for anyone NOT under the supervision of a medical practitioner, or if they have been encouraged to exercise by their doctor. (More serious conditions can be addressed in a 1 to 1 class).

Structure of 6 week course

Week 1:  An assessment of postural imbalances working through a series of tests to demonstrate mis-aligned areas of the body. Looking for muscular imbalance around the spine which causes excess curving of the spine. A pelvic assessment to check for mis-alignment or twisting, and any sacroilliac joint pain and a specific exercise will be given to practice daily for the first week before continuing with the rest of the course. This will be re-checked at week 2 and 6.

Weeks 2-4:  We will work closely with the Biomedical Trusts back sequence, the Dongaonker Sequence, which is suitable for most chronic types of back pain. An introduction to suitable Pranayama (breathing exercise), to help control chronic pain, and how to relax physical areas of intense stress in the body

Week 5: We will concentrate on hip balancing sequences

Week 6: Re-assessment of students

Course Dates: 6 week course beginning Monday 7th January 2019

Cost: £100

Hatha Yoga Beginners Course: Thursday’s 7pm-8pm with Jenny

What? Over the 6 week course you will gain a firm foundation of the key physical postures of HATHA yoga which will give you the confidence and knowledge to advance into any of the current yoga classes running.  We will bring together a collection of foundation postures forming them into flowing sequences called Sun Salutations, and static held postures called ‘ASANAS’. You will not only learn the physical posture but the benefit the posture holds for your health, and conditioning of the body. You will improve flexibility and build strength and understand the art of balancing and that it doesn’t just involve the physical form but the emotional and mental.  We will develop an awareness for your own personal practice and development, and which limb of yoga is most suitable for you to follow.

During the course we will begin to study the art of breathing ‘PRANAYAMA’ and use both the abdominal breath and Ujjayi breath during practice.  You will come to understand how yoga is more than just a physical contorted shape, but an awareness of mind body and breath connection which allows the pose to unfold.

Yoga is an on-going practice, which develops over time so is not a quick fix but a tool for life of self-awareness and preservation.

Yoga differs from other exercises due to the emphasis on relaxation so the body breaks down the lactic acid other forms of exercise create.  As we relax, the body is flooded with oxygen which allows the body to fight fatigue and allows the muscles to release so you feel worked but relaxed at the end of the class.

Course structure: (all sessions 1 hour except week 6 which is a 1.5hrs to allow a full practice)

Week 1: Introduction to breath, fundamental warm up postures, sun salutation – surya namaskara, relaxation/SAVASANA

Week 2: Breath work, Surya Namaskara, sun Power series 1 – sun salutation, relaxation
