Ditch the detox!

Next

After Christmas Day, we often start to turn our attention towards recovering from the inevitable over-indulgence and excess and look for diets or detoxes to help.

You are probably about to be inundated with reasons why we need to stock our fridges with kale, buy expensive juicers and Instagram pictures of salads labelled #cleanse. But despite the barrage of health information letting us know that we should be ‘detoxing’ our bodies, this approach to a January health kick may not be as useful as many health gurus may have you think.

Detox diets promise to make us feel better by cutting out 'toxins' and focus on eliminating caffeine, alcohol, salt, sugar and processed foods. But, it turns out you're already equipped with everything you need. They're called your liver and kidneys.  A healthy liver and kidneys detoxify the blood, removing any impurities and keeping the body clean. If everything is in working order, there should be no need to supplement this with restrictive and faddy diets or expensive detox products.

HURRAH!

So what is the best way to get healthy in 2020?  If you want a health boost after a particularly heavy Christmas you just need to implement a healthy balanced diet, rich in fresh fruit and vegetables and exercise regularly. The NHS recommends that the average adult should undertake around 30 minutes of exercise five days a week.

That’s it – no ‘detox’ teas, juice only diets, or wonder foods…just healthy food and regular exercise.

So instead of ‘cutting out’ foods and restricting yourself this January, we want to embrace a more positive approach and invite you to ‘add in’! We challenge you to add a new health and fitness activity into your regime and embrace the positive difference that this brings you.

Here’s our 5 week guide to inspire you to try something new each week this January. Give it a try and see the positive impact it can have…

Week two – mix it up!

Change up your current class regime with a mix of new classes and workouts.  Take a look at our new programme for January and pick a class to try this week that you have never done before. If you always do yoga, give a HIIT class a try. If you are a regular at spinning, give our foam rolling class a go. Switching up your exercise routine for new and interesting classes will keep you engaged and challenge your body to learn new techniques. Take a look at our new programme here.

Week three – give a brand NEW group class concept a try!

January 2020 will see us offer the ultimate indoor cycling experience with the launch of the new Group Cycle™ studio. This industry-leading innovation is a first on the Island, with Indoor Cycling sessions that offer a fitness class unlike any other currently available. Utilising Technogym Group Cycle™ equipment the classes combine innovative connectivity with a multisensory experience that’s bursting with entertainment and motivation. Delivered through inspirational videos and music, and instruction from our in-house cycling experts, we’ll deliver a ride to remember! Through Group Cycle™ Connect technology riders can use real-time data to track workouts and consequently monitor and improve your performance. Whether you’re a beginner or a more experienced spinner or cyclist we’ll show you how. Look out for more information about booking your taster sessions early in the new year!

Week 4 – stick with it!

Have you ever tried a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) session? Now is your chance with our FREE workshop on 24th January from 11am – 12 noon with our in-house psychologist, Martyn Bailey. The start of a new year is the perfect time to turn a new page, which is probably why so many people create New Year's Resolutions. A new year often feels like a fresh start, a great opportunity to eliminate bad habits and establish new routines that will help you grow psychologically, emotionally, socially, physically, or intellectually. Of course, resolutions are much easier to make than to keep and by the end of January, many of us have abandoned our resolve and settled back into our old patterns.  This workshop will look at why New Year's resolutions often fail and how we can use the principles of CBT to ensure that we choose appropriate goals that we are able to implement in the long term for continued positive change. This workshop is free, but please register your place by calling our team on 01983 766222.

Week five – me time

We all need to give ourselves a break, and a little downtime works well for almost everybody. It doesn’t really matter what the activity or inactivity is. The idea is to give your body, mind, and heart a chance to relax and recharge. If you keep going at full speed every day, it can be really hard on you, both physically and mentally. We were not designed to go 24/7/365 (even though that’s become a popular modern-day mantra). So celebrate your month of positive change by treating yourself to a Wellness Massage, a restoring Aromatherapy Associates body treatment, or a remedial sports treatment. AND join us on 29th January, 6pm - 7.30pm, for our FREE Reset & Renew workshop with Claire Robilliard from PUKKA herbs . The workshop will be packed with seasonal nutrition and sleep advice to support you in starting your year right. Together we will explore ways to boost immunity, improve mental clarity and how to relax into a restful slumber. Call our team to book your place: 01983766222.
