Family Cycle Ride

What better way to explore the Island’s beautiful landscape scenery and rugged coastline than by bike? The West Bay Country Club & Spa's qualified trail leaders cater for beginners through to advanced cyclists and their rides highlight some of the best scenery and terrain the West Wight has to offer. Zach Blow takes us on a route suitable for families and beginners… Zach Blow – Road Cyclist, Spinning Instructor, Trail Leader & Fitness Professional Zach is a keen road cyclist and his passion for exercise started in the forces. He soon learnt that the harder, longer, faster method doesn’t achieve the results needed to obtain your optimum fitness levels. Zach’s approach is based around the science behind the way your body functions and adapts to ensure that individuals get the most from their training. This is a philosophy Zach takes into his weekly Spinning classes, which are all based on heart rate training zones and recovery rates. Zach’s passion for cycling is clearly evident on Wednesday nights when he leads the Hills Killer Spinning session which is based on routes from some of the world’s most famous cycle races, including the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia.

Zach’s Family Bike Ride Route

Length: Approximately 12km Level: Beginner – ideal for families with young children Profile: Fairly flat route with a mixture of coastal paths and cycle paths “This route is a favourite of mine when I take families staying at the The West Bay Country Club & Spa out on guided rides as part of their holiday. Families enjoy this ride because it’s more than just a bike ride; there are several places to stop and take photos as well as picnic spots and local pubs.  The route starts from The West Bay Country Club & Spa where you head towards Brambles Chine.   You will come to a junction where Colwell Bay is to the left and the route straight ahead takes you towards Fort Victoria. If the weather is nice I head down to the beach, even if it’s to throw a few stones.  If the weather is really nice we sometimes forget the rest of the ride and stay at the beach! Leave Colwell Bay and continue along the Fort Victoria coastal path and you come to a fantastic viewing point looking out over Hurst Point - the perfect photo opportunity! Carry on along the coastal path and then you can turn left to Fort Victoria, which has a large green fit with picnic benches, or you can carry on along the coastal path, which will then join the road and then Halletts Shute.  Turn left down the road and then immediately right onto a path signposted to the boat yards. After a few hundred metres there will be a path signed for Freshwater Bay.  Take this route where you will cross through farm fields, road and paths. This is the perfect opportunity for children to go nice and fast.  After 1-2 miles you will join the causeway, and then you will approach the Red Lion pub…where I like to stop off for a nice pub lunch before heading back to The West Bay Country Club & Spa along the causeway and the old railway line.” The West Bay Country Club & Spa's qualified Trail Leaders cater for beginners through to advanced cyclists, tailoring rides for all experience and fitness levels, and bikes are available for hire. All levels

These classes have been specifically designed to allow participants to work at their own intensity level, with the ability to modify all exercises according to their own personal fitness.


A person new to training or an individual with below average fitness levels can be termed as a beginner. These classes are also suitable for those returning to exercise after a break/injury.


A person training at intermediate level should have a fair amount of base fitness and coordination and thus can be exposed to a higher intensity workout.


At an advanced level, the participant should have experience in subjecting themselves to high intensity training on a regular basis. Every person starting off as a beginner should aspire to reach this level.
